  5. Quality Matters: Essential Factors to Focus on When Purchasing Ginseng Extract

Contents

When purchasing ginseng extract, there are several key factors to focus on:

Species:

The mainly ginseng species are Panax ginseng C. A Meyer (Chinese Panax ginseng & Korean red ginseng), the Panax quinquefolius(American ginseng), and Notoginseng native to Yunan Province China. Among them, the former two are much more hot-selling in dietary supplements and skincare products.

Age of plant:

The concentration of ginsenosides in ginseng roots increases with the plant’s age, the roots can be ready for extraction after at least three years of growth. Generally we use more than 5 years old ginseng root as raw materials for extraction in order to make more cost-effective ginsenosides.

The part used for extraction:

Ginseng extracts can be derived from different parts of the plant, including the root, stem&leaves, and berries. Both Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius have extracts from these different parts, with the constituents primarily being ginsenosides.

Ginseng root extract is a better choice for pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements, and health foods due to its long-standing use in traditional medicine and proven effectiveness.

Processing Method:

The different processing method brings different raw materials: white ginseng and red ginseng, which inconsequently resulted in different Panax ginseng root extract: the red ginseng root extract and ginseng root extract.

Both red ginseng and white ginseng belong to Panax ginseng C.A.Mey specie. The difference is that the red ginseng has the process of steaming from fresh white ginseng after cleaning, which makes the color become dark and dark till red.

The testing method:

The testing method of the content directly influences the quality of the ginseng extract. The general testing methods for ginseng extract are HPLC and UV.For the content of a fixed batch of ginseng extract, the UV result is higher than the HPLC, and the HPLC is more specified in the list of the key phytochemicals of the ginsenoside. For a better understanding of the ingredients in your formula, we suggest choosing ginseng extract tested by HPLC.

Solvents used:

The choice of solvent directly affects the extraction results. Water and ethanol are the two solvents typically used for plant extraction. Both ginseng stem&leaf saponins and ginseng root saponins extracted by water have excellent solubility without impurities, while ethanol extraction may have lower solubility due to the presence of lipids, which are soluble in ethanol but not in water.

Impurities:

Ensure that the ginseng extract you purchase has undergone strict quality control measures to minimize impurities, such as heavy metals and pesticide residues, etc. Compliance with regulatory limits is essential for maintaining the quality and safety of the extract.

By carefully considering these factors, you will be equipped to make a well-informed decision and select a high-quality ginseng extract that aligns with your specific requirements.
